What is The Federal Idea?

L’idée fédérale/The Federal Idea is a network of Quebecers convinced of the virtues of federalism as a principle of government in complex countries and of the advantages of Canadian federalism for Québec.

The Federal Idea undertakes various activities intended to enrich public debate about federalism and Québec’s political future. Among other things it may:

  • Sponsor and disseminate quality accessible research on different current-affairs matters relative to federalism in Canada and to comparative federalism.
  • Conduct public opinion surveys aimed at a better knowledge of the perception that Quebecers have of federalism.
  • Organize conferences on the theory and practice of federalism in Canada and abroad.

The network is staunchly non-partisan. Members of the network maintain their complete independence. The Federal Idea has no program, except for adherence to the principles and values of federalism.

The Federal Idea is distinguished by the quality of the research it publishes and of the conferences it organizes.

Members of The Federal Idea are required to pay a 10$ annual contribution.
